Mental disorders are common these days, they maybe present as a primary disorder or combined with other medical disorders. One of the mental disorders is anxiety, which is a common emotion during the early stages of illness when a person does not know what to expect and may fear the worst. Anxiety is of many types ex: social anxiety, separation anxiety, math anxiety, test anxiety etc. Social anxiety is experienced due to fear, apprehension or worry related to social situations and being judged by others. The symptoms of social anxiety are, blushing, sweating, trembling, palpitations, nausea and stammering. Diagnoses of social anxiety are psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy and medication. The diagnosis is done to acquire change in physical reactions and thinking patterns. While approximately 13.3% of the general population may meet criteria for social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety is also a commong type of anxiety among individuals. Separation anxiety is common in children than in adults.It is the distress experienced by toddlers or children between the age of 7 months to 18 months,when they are separated from their caretaker or from whom they have a strong attachment.The symptoms of separation anxiety are axcessive anxiety,homesickness,nightmares, excessive dismay,headache,dizziness,nausea etc. There are two types of treatment that can be done to cure separation anxiety. They are behavior therapy which exercises to help the child face the anxiety and psychodynamic therapy where the child would talk about fears and worries. It is found that approximately 4 percent of children and adolescents have separation anxiety. Another type of anxiety that is common is the math anxiety. Math anxiety is fear of math due to some past unpleasant incidence, which troubles future learning. During this type of anxiety one cringes, when have to go for a math class, has a fear of math tests, afraid to ask questions and might feel awkward when not able to keep up with the class. These fears can be conquered by good experience learning math, by asking questions, overcome the negative self talk, be relaxed and comfortable while studying math and develop responsibility for one's own success and failures. Math anxiety is also related to another type to anxiety i.e. test anxiety. Test anxiety is similar to performance anxiety, where one is under pressure to perform well. Test anxiety makes one jittery, completely stressed out, frequent headaches etc. This is common among people who worry a lot about being perfect in everything, students who are not prepared or even perfectly prepared for an exam. One can easily get over this type of anxiety by taking up the task as a challenge, have an optimistic view, ask for help from experts, be prepared well in advance, accept your mistakes and learn from them. When you make up yr mind to do something, half the battle is won, so last but not the least, take good care of yourself. From all the above points we come to know that anxiety is a mental disorder and it can be overcome only by mentally stabilizing yourself. Hence the most important thing that we all have to remember is that good health leads to good life. Therefore one has to take good care of one's self to overcome all the mental disorders to lead a happy and successful life. |
