Living with low self-esteem can be a terrible experience. The person with low self-esteem never really enjoys life as much as he or she would like to. The low self-esteem person is usually the one who rarely wants to take risks. This is the person who won't accept new challenges. This is the person held back by something that he or she has the power to change. Low self-esteem needs to be turned around within the person suffering from it. Waiting too long to deal with the problem can mean missed opportunities in professional life, relationships, and quality of life. If you suffer from low self-esteem, here are a few ways you can turn that around.
The first step is to recognize your negative thinking pattern and get those thoughts out of your mind. All personally negative thoughts should be disputed from within. If you have been told all your life that you'll never amount to anything, ask yourself why you believe that. If you can't come up with a good answer then toss the thought out. Low self-esteem is the result of the "practice" of negative thinking. To get rid of it, you have to practice thinking otherwise.
Shake off the perfectionism. This does not mean to get careless but you should not be afraid to make mistakes. Plus, when you make mistakes, you should do what you can to correct them. Otherwise, take steps to not make the same mistakes again and move on. Living in the mistakes of your past contributes significantly to low self-esteem because you are always telling yourself that you can never do anything right. Also understand that some things can be changed and some cannot.
Only associate with people who build you up instead of tear you down. Of course this is not practical in the real world because we all have to work and live with a variety of personalities. However when you have a choice, hang around people who want only the best for you as these will be people that enable you to turn around your low self-esteem.
Your demeanor tells a lot about you. Try smiling for a change. Look to make people laugh or at least laugh at someone else's humor. Laughter and smiles go a long way in making those around you respond positively to you. In other words, people will begin to like to be around you. And if they don't like to be around you after you make positive changes then don't waste time worrying about it. Not everyone likes everybody.
Take care of your appearance and your environment. Do something to improve your appearance gradually. It might take some new clothes or getting your hair styled a different way. Realize that by making your appearance as presentable as possible that it will boost your self-esteem by default. Plus, you will display an image of confidence that others will perceive. Keep your home and work area as clean and presentable as possible because this shows a person who is in control of his or her personal and professional life. |
